California’s Own ‘Yellowstone’? 2,000-Acre Napa Valley Ranch Is Listed for $100 Million After 87 Years of Family Ownership
Ranch life has long been a part of American culture—and the hit series “Yellowstone” has sparked a whole new wave of fascination with the centuries-old industry with its dramatic portrayal of the country’s wealthiest and most prolific landowners.
Showrunner Taylor Sheridan drew on his own childhood experience in Texas while creating the series, which centers around a fictional legacy ranch in Montana. Now that the hit show has reached its finale, he may well want to turn his attention to the West Coast, where a newly listed $100 million legacy ranch in California promises even more inspiration for a wild new series.
Known as the Glendale Ranch, the Napa Valley property spans 2,000 lush acres, including more than 40 acres of vineyards.
It might not be as vast as the fictional Yellowstone Ranch, but it shares a similar history. Originally inhabited by the Onasatis people, it was developed for farming in the early 1800s by the George Yount family, who had a little something in common with the Dutton family in “Yellowstone.”
Though the ranch’s history might not boast the same dramatic flair as that of the Duttons’, it does have ties to some of the region’s most influential families.
Oil magnate David Fasken purchased the property in 1938. The Fasken family ranks No. 93 on Forbes’ list of America’s wealthiest, their original fortune coming from the oil fields of Texas.
Fasken Oil & Ranch in the Midland, TX, area is one of America’s biggest privately owned oil companies today.
Who knows? Sheridan could well have looked to their company for inspiration for his latest series, “Landman,” starring Billy Bob Thornton. Regardless, Glendale Ranch has remained in the family for nearly 87 years, a rich, verdant contrast to their Texas holdings.
But the successive family is now ready to pass their incomparable property to the next family ready to create a legacy.
“As the stewards of one of the last great expanses in the Napa Valley, the new owners will have an extraordinary opportunity to shape this valley’s future,” said current owners Lindsey Wiseman and Andrew Green.
“With hundreds of plantable acres, secured water rights and a canvas that extends from the private valley floor to the ridge lines, their decisions will influence this landscape for generations to come.”
“With its rich history and sublime beauty, it’s arguably the crown jewel of Napa Valley,” says listing agent Erin Lail, with Coldwell Banker Brokers of the Valley. “This is not just a property; it’s an opportunity to invest in a legacy that can be cherished for generations to come in the heart of Napa Valley.”
“Glendale Ranch is incomparably rare,” the listing states. “The last great estate of its size, a private valley unto its own spanning 2,000 acres of rolling oak woodlands, ancient forests, and cascading waterways.
“This isn’t just land; it’s a sanctuary where stillness speaks and purpose unfolds. As you step onto these grounds, the outside world drops away, leaving you connected to something greater.”
Four for living
Like many family ranches, Glendale Ranch comes with numerous residences, including the main house, also known as “White House.” It’s a gleaming Victorian-Colonial mansion built in the 1880s.
It features six bedrooms and 3.5 baths in 3,328 square feet of living space. It has a detached two-car garage and workshop.
Original features include the stained-glass windows, elaborate gingerbread trim, and elegant wraparound front porch.
There’s also the Grove House, which was built in the early 1900s. Elegantly renovated in the modern farmhouse style, it has three bedrooms and two bathrooms in 1,830 square feet of living space. It comes with a water well with a 10,000-gallon concrete storage tank disguised as a lovely lake.
Then there’s the Creekside House, which was built in the early 1900s. The 1,709-square-foot residence includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms. A two-car garage is attached.
And what wine country property would be complete without a vineyard-view house? This 1940s kit home was delivered by rail, and it features two bedrooms and two baths in 1,520 square feet of living space.
Three separate wells supply water for these homes and other parts of the property.
Vital vineyards
The grand estate is made up of 17 parcels, two of which exceed 320 acres. It features 40 acres of planted vineyards and abundant water sources and rights, including a 7-acre lake used for swimming, boating, and fishing. It was built in 1953 to support recreational activities and vineyard irrigation.
The vineyards produce an average yield of 2.3 tons per acre. There are more than 20 acres of cabernet sauvignon, 4 acres of malbec, and additional plots of petit verdot, petit syrah, and merlot grapes. The listing notes that the land could grow so much more.
“There is an immediate fallow field of 25 acres that can be planted and over 791 acres total that are under 30% slope,” the listing notes.
The vineyards are managed by third-generation winemaker Lucio “Cio” Perez, who has been with the property for more than 40 years. Renowned Napa winemaker Bob Egelhoff has crafted exceptional wines from these vineyards.
The vineyard’s history dates to the early days of Napa Valley’s wine industry, with contributions from pioneers such as Charles Krug, Beringer, and Inglenook.
It won’t be easy for Green and Wiseman to leave the property, but they feel it’s time. They inherited Glendale Ranch from Wiseman’s great-aunt, Barbara Towne Fasken, a prominent World War II service pilot, who was Texas oil billionaire David Fasken’s daughter-in-law.
“The estate, with roots tracing back to the earliest days of California winemaking, offers a unique opportunity for those seeking grand-scale privacy and the chance to develop a significant presence in one of the most prestigious valleys in the wine world,” the owners said.
“Because Glendale Ranch has continued largely untouched for most of a century, today it represents a canvas on which the next steward can paint their dreams.”
